Wisdom teeth are the third and last molars on each side of the upper and lower jaws. They are the last teeth to erupt, usually in your late teens or early twenties. By the time they errupt, there is typically no longer enough room in the jaw to accommodate them. This can lead to misalignment of the teeth or impaction that can result in painful crowding and disease.
Since removing the wisdom teeth at an earlier age is less demanding and has fewer complications, the American Dental Association recommends that people between 16 and 19 have their wisdom teeth evaluated to see if they need to be removed. Getting your wisdom teeth out is a pretty common occurrence and with the right kind of anesthesia, it is a relatively comfortable procedure. It should be considered if you are developing frequent cavities and infections, or gum issues affect the health of adjacent teeth.
